Middleton and Elizabeth reefs are a continuation of the lord Howe rise, north/south oriented undersea range. These reefs are the crater rims of now extinct volcanoes and amazingly rise to just above sea level. This creates relatively safe anchorage in most conditions and brings the voyager to an incredible place 300 miles east of Australia's most easterly point.
