| Preparation for Sea |
Be able to prepare a yacht fro sea, including engine checks, selection
of sails, securing and stowage of all gear on upper deck and below. |
| Organisation of Watch |
Be able to take charge of a watch at sea, by day or night and organise
an anchor watch. Know action required in reduced visibility, adverse
weather conditions and in emergency situations. |
| Deck Work |
Reef, shake out reefs and change sails to suit prevailing conditions.
Prepare an anchor, mooring warps and take charge of work on the upper
deck when mooring alongside, coming to a buoy, anchoring, weighing
anchor and slipping from a buoy or alongside berth. |
| Navigation |
Be proficient in chart work, and carry out routine navigational
duties. |
| Meteorology |
Know sources of forecast information, can interpret forecast and use a
barometer as a forecasting aid. |
| Rules of the Road |
A working knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing
Collisions at Sea. |
| Maintenance and Repair Work |
Understand and be able to carry out maintenance tasks. Make eye splice
in rope and common and sailmakers' whippings. Know the properties and
uses of common synthetic fibres. |
| General Organisation |
Make out a victualling list and supervise victualling organisation
afloat. |
| Emergency Situations |
Is able to take correct action as helmsman for recovery of man
overboard. Fully understand use of distress flares and EPIRBS. Know
correct procedures for helicopter rescue. |
| Boat Handling |
Under power, bring a boat safely to and from an alongside berth,
mooring buoy and anchor. Under sail bring a boat safely to and from a
mooring buoy and anchor. Be able to accept a tow and steer and manoeuvre
while being towed. |
| Passage Planning |
Plan a short passage, on tidal/estuary waters, taking account of
relevant navigational hazards and limitations imposed by the type of
boat and the strength of the crew. |
