Baysail has been establised on the Northern Rivers since 2000 . We meet the needs of your busy lifestyle by offering midweek, evening theory classes, and half day practical or one day complete course.
Theory only - 4 hrs - enrol in this course if you have previous boating experience or intend to get experience independantly. - A log book of your practical experience ( min 3 trips) must be presented to NSW Maritime with your Certificate of Satisfactory Course Completion in order to obtain a general boat licence. See practical experience* below.
Theory and Practical - 4 hrs theory (as above) then 4 hrs practical, on water, boat skills training and assessment. There are many benefits to attending full day safe boating course with Baysail where we will take you through practical application of trip preparation and planning, driving a vessel, safety equipment, general navigation (rules of the road) docking, mooring, and low and high speed manoeuvring.

Who is your trainer? Iain McCabe.
Iain's maritime background is vast. From a child hood spent on lighthouses of Australia's east coast to extreme sailing in the Antarctic Circle, rounding Cape Horn and over 60000 miles ocean racing and power boat deliveries in the Atlantic, Pacific and Great Southern Ocean.
All great stuff... but what really matters is the real, practical, operational experience in your waterways.
A professional instructor since 1985 and as the founder of Baysail Pty Ltd, Iain has commercially operated a professional sail and power boat training school in the Northern Rivers for over 10 years.
It is this specific, local experience that separates Baysail from other providers.
What to Bring
You’ll need to bring along suitable proof of identity. Eg NSW drivers licence, passport.
Persons aged 12-16 years must bring an Australian full birth certificate, either original or a certified copy. Their parent or guardian is also required to show proof of identity.

*Practical Experience - In the interest of safer boating to obtain a General Boat Licence evidence must be provided detailing a minimum of three (3) trips in a powered vessel under power ( excluding pwc) in the company of an experienced skipper.
An experienced Skipper is defined as “a person who holds as a minimum a valid NSW or interstate general licence and has held the general licence for at least three (3) years. Young adults are not considered experienced skippers for this purpose.
The vessel used to undertake practical experience must carry the prescribed safety equipment and and be fitted with the appropriate lights if undertaking optional night time navigation.
Details of each trip must be recorded in a log book and be verified by the experienced skipper .
The applicant and the experienced skipper must also confirm that all elements relating to practical experience competencies as listed in the log book have been covered by initialling each element. A log book be picked up free of charge from any NSW Maritime Operations Centre, RTA Registry and Government Access Centre.
Please take note that practical experience is not required prior to attending the Safe Boating Course however will be required prior to obtaining a licence.
Refund Policy
- Refund if Baysail cancels training:- If we cancel the training before it starts, we must refund the fees you paid for the cancelled training.
- Upon receipt of booking registration, fees are payable. If you are unable to attend the training day you elected you may transfer to another date or your booking may be transferred to a gift certificate or voucher which you may offer another person of your choice.
Enhance your learning -So you can enhance your learning we recommend you to do some pre-study prior to attending. This can be done by either pre reading of the NSW Maritime Safe boating handbook or our course notes available on enrolment.
